What's a "Tandem Skydive"?
"Tandem": is believed to be derived from Latin, and it means "Double" or "Dual" (like Tandem bicycle). In the "Tandem Skydive" the skydiver (or the Tandem Student) is attached to a Tandem Instructor, and the two experience the skydive together, securely fastened to one another.
The Tandem Skydive enables the Skydiver to experience the full magnitude of a skydive, including freefall in terminal velocity of up to 230 kph of vertical speed, and a canopy glide to the ground - two polar opposites that compose one unique experience. The Tandem Skydive does not require the skydiver to have any prior knowledge or training or have any specific shape of physical fitness, other than those outlined in FAQ.
The minimal age to perform a Tandem Skydive in Canada is 16 (any skydiver below legal age of 18 will need parental consent). As far as the maximum age, that's up to you! Jumpers must also be within our weight limits (250lbs for men, 220lbs for women) and height/weight proportionate.
At Adventure Skydiving we offer a Tandem Skydive from 7,500 feet to 8,000 feet, or a Tandem Skydive from the maximum altitude of 10,000 feet. The difference between the two is the higher you go the more freefall time you get, the more ample the experience. These two skydives are equally as safe.
If you think you may have any special needs, do not hesitate to call and inquire.
What's the process from showing up to skydiving?
The Tandem student arrives at the dropzone, and checks in. At this point the skydiver will fill in the waivers and be weighed. The Tandem Student will then be taken to watch a short 15 minute long briefing video, that is constructed to answer a lot of your questions, and show you how the skydive actually takes place. This way, you know what to expect of your jump. The video also reviews the basic safety procedures and the equipment that will be used in your skydive.
After the video a member of the staff will review what was said in the video with you. There will be plenty of time for questions.
The skydiver is then assigned a jumpsuit, a soft hat and an adjustable harness. These harnesses are strong enough to hold a small truck. Seriously, they are! And yes, that's enough.
At this point the Tandem Student and the Tandem Instructor are paired up and will board the aircraft. The plane will then take off to a scenic climb up above Manitoba to the target altitude of 7500 to 8,000 feet or up to 12,000 feet ASL, which takes about 20 minutes (a lot of people ask how high it is, at which point we'll tell them when they look out and they're scared out of their minds... that means we're at about 1,000 feet...)
Slightly before our target altitude, the instructor will hook the student up and preform all the necessary checks, allowing enough time to get comfortable and discuss the skydive yet again before the Tandem skydivers leave the airplane. Upon reaching the designated drop altitude the Tandem Instructor will open the door, the tandem pair will climb out and off they go into the sky...
Freefall takes anywhere between 20-45 seconds, depending on the target altitude the Skydiver has chosen, and the combined weight of the Tandem pair, which will reach a terminal vertical velocity of roughly 200-240 km/h hurling towards the ground. At a designated altitude of roughly 5,000ft Then the main parachute is pulled and the Tandem pair will glide all the way to the ground.
